"Justice is so important to me. I think a lot of people value kindness and although I think being kind is important, I think that justice is just so much more integral to who I am. Because I think justice encompasses respect, it encompasses a sense of fundamental human rights and equality. It encompasses the idea that we all deserve a certain standard and that if you break that code there needs to be some sort of responsibility, some sort of consequence. Maybe because I value that it makes me seem not as kind to others ... but I don't really feel the need to be kind, I feel the need to change the world."
6 May 2017: Harry Potter fan fiction, sex culture in St. Andrews, the romanticization of eating disorders in our society, and the life-saving power of feminism - all that and more in my chat with Rebecca Mitchell, a passionate, loving, and kick-ass feminist who is bound to change the world. Listen to her speak and you'll immediately agree with me. Press 'play'!
Reflections on my Conversation: One of the things Chewie (sorry, it just feels too weird to call her Rebecca) and I bonded over was our feminism. She was one of the first people I was able to talk to about women's issues and truly be heard and understood. But more important than that, she has been the most amazing teacher, whether she knows she occupies that role for me or not. I have learned so much about intersectional feminism and both overt and covert sexism from her, but I never really knew (1) why she was so knowledgeable or (2) what feminism truly meant for her. It's funny how much more there is to learn even about our closest friends, which is why I, personally, was so thankful for this chat. Knowing where Chewie's activist voice comes from has taught me even more about the world and about her. Again, she's one hell of a teacher. I hope that others appreciate the honesty she displays in this interview (and all the time). And perhaps it will lead you to find solace in feminism, fantasy, and friendship like Chewie did. Much love to you, Chew!
