"Things happen for a reason...Things will just work themselves out and it's not a 'they have to, it's a last ditch effort', it's a 'they have to because that's the law of the universe.'"
4 May 2017: A first year St Andrews student born and raised in a conservative town in New Jersey, Erin Kirkpatrick talks forming her own views on the world despite her environment, finding her activist voice, and transitioning into university life. Be enchanted by her candor and authenticity by pressing "play".
Reflections on my Conversation: So Erin is unique in the way that she's the first person I've directly asked to do this whose story I wasn't already familiar with. I mean, she's unique in so many other, more important ways too but you get the point. I am so thankful that she opened up and shared her life with me (and the interweb by extension) because her take on the world is so refreshing. Growing up liberally-minded in a conservative environment, she became equipped with the skills our whole world could use a crash course in: engaging respectfully and productively in conversations with people who have different views than yourself. Her artistic and yet social-justice oriented self will surely use those talents towards good. I was also struck by her incredible sense of self. At 18 years old she speaks so confidently in her own voice, which is something I strive to do someday too. Keep doing you, Erin!
